Business diversification - adding value to surplus produce
Objective:
If feasible through an acceptable business case, establish a new business manufacturing and selling added value food products using surplus produce that has a low intrinsic monetary value.
Assignment:
Working with a partner in Haven Nurseries in Worcestershire assess the local market opportunities for selling added value tomato products; establish a manufacturing process in which fresh ripe tomato fruits are converted to tomato juice and other tomato based products; establish a network of customers in Worcestershire and the West Midlands region.
Actions:
- Consumer acceptability of a tomato juice tested with success through a tasting event.
- Established links with learned institutions and the Manufacturing Advisory Service to develop a food safe manufacturing process.
- Prepared and submitted successful grant applications to support the development of the infrastructure of the business.
- Collaborated with University College Birmingham to develop a series of new products which were launched in spring 2009.
- Engaging with consumers at shows and events using tastings to promote the range of products including fresh tomatoes.
- In partnership with Haven Nurseries and through membership of the regional food group created and developed an expanding customer network.
Outcome:
The creation of a new business, Drews of Worcester added value tomato products incorporating Tomato Juice, Spicy Tomato Blast, Gazpacho and Potage Provencale all manufactured from surplus ripe fresh tomatoes grown by Haven Nurseries.
